The Fitting Mill is an independent ski boot fitting workshop based in Pirbright, Surrey, offering a highly specialised, appointment-only service. With over 55 years of combined experience fitting ski boots, we focus on delivering comfort, performance, and long-term fit quality without compromise.
We’re not a shop floor with distractions. We’re not here to upsell. We’re a purpose-built boot fitting studio designed to give each customer the time, space, and technical attention they deserve. Every fitting is led by certified specialists trained in biomechanics, foot and lower limb analysis, and the latest custom ski boot technologies. Whether you’re an experienced skier or planning your first trip to the mountains, we take a considered, practical approach tailored to your needs.
Every custom ski boot fit starts with understanding your feet. We begin with a full foot and lower limb analysis, covering foot length, width, volume, arch height, ankle flexion, and alignment. This goes beyond a basic measurement, our assessment helps identify any pressure points, asymmetries, or underlying biomechanical issues that may affect boot fit and skiing performance.
We use industry-standard equipment and expert knowledge to evaluate how your feet behave when weighted and unweighted.
Using the results of your assessment, we carefully select a shortlist of ski boots that best suit your foot shape, skiing ability, and goals. We select from a curated range of boots we trust for fit, performance, and modifiability.
Once a model is selected, we conduct a shell check. This involves removing the liner and standing your foot inside the bare plastic shell to check for correct spacing around the toes, heel, and instep. It helps us identify if the boot is the right “starting point” for your feet or if further adjustments are required.
Once we’ve selected the right ski boot shell and model for your foot, the next step is building a solid foundation inside the boot: the footbed.
At The Fitting Mill, we work in partnership with Sidas, one of the global leaders in custom insole technology. Their products are trusted by boot fitters and elite athletes worldwide for their precision, comfort, and performance benefits.
Using heat-moulding and vacuum-sealing technology, we create fully custom ski boot footbeds on-site. These insoles are shaped directly to your feet, helping to stabilise your arch, improve foot and ankle alignment, reduce unwanted movement inside the boot and prevent fatigue and hot spots on long ski days.
A properly shaped footbed also enhances the consistency of your fit and ensures that your foot remains locked in the correct position inside the boot, making all the difference when it comes to control, responsiveness, and comfort on snow.
Not every ski boot requires modification, but when it does, we have the tools, experience, and workshop environment to make precise adjustments that elevate both comfort and performance.
Once your boot and footbed are in place, we assess the overall fit with a detailed shell and liner check. If any fine-tuning is needed, this is the stage where we address it. That might include heat moulding the liners for a closer anatomical fit, stretching or grinding specific areas of the shell to relieve pressure points, or making alignment changes to help your stance and edge control on the slopes.
These adjustments are carried out only when necessary and always in direct response to what we’ve seen during your fit. Some skiers leave with an off-the-shelf boot that fits perfectly. Others benefit from small, targeted modifications that make a big difference once they’re on snow.
Every change is done in-house using professional ski boot fitting tools, and always with your feedback and comfort at the centre of the process.

My son and I went to get new boots. The best ski boot fitting service ever.Posted on Ian HeathTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely spot on. Cool shop, loads of knowledge. I’m well happy with my visit where I had bindings mounted, custom footbeds and heat moulded boots. Cheers SamPosted on Pete BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Coming up to the ski season, I was looking to purchase boots for the first time. Noticing that the fitting mill had just opened, I decided to give it a try and booked a fitting with Sam. Everything about my experience was excellent and I can't recommend the fitting mill enough. Sam had a wealth of knowledge and went above and beyond to find the best option for me. Having an uncommon foot size meant my options were limited for boots, but not only was there an option for me in store but they went above and beyond and ordered more boots in for me to try. Sam was excellent in helping me find the best fit for me, and was honest about the benefits and drawbacks of each boot, not trying to sell me something that was not necessary. I walked out with a pair of boots that fit me perfectly and will be returning in the future for ski assistance and servicingPosted on Ben DahanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a boot fitting with Sam on 04.11.15. It was a fantastic experience and worth every penny. Sam was very welcoming and hugely knowledgeable about all things ski related. I was very pleased with the service and won’t hesitate to use again or recommend others!Posted on Theo PopperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Another positive review for Sam at the Fitting Mill. I found him to be very knowledgeable, and friendly, and his showroom/ workspace is very well presented and set up. I went with boots that I had bought elsewhere, to see if he could make them fit better. He explained and showed me why the boot wasn't the right boot for my foot, and showed me what would be much better, but didn't have the exact boot in stock, so I can't report on the actual fitting process. Yet. I will definitely be going back to him though.Posted on Karin BradburyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Such a great experience getting new custom Insoles, not only do by boots feel like they have more life in them but I learnt it about boots and boot technology that I feel much more equipped to buy in the future - I will absolutely be returning when my old panterras give out and I need new boots. Great shop, loads of knowledge and tons of passion. Highly recommend!!Posted on Sam VincentTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After years of persevering with ill fitting ski boots, I thought the time was right to invest in a new pair. Sam at The Fitting Mill was excellent. Using years of expertise together with the latest fitting technology and a plethora of boot types, he found the source of why my old boots weren’t comfortable and after a thorough fitting appointment I left with perfectly fitting new ski boots.Posted on William MorrisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great fitting experience with Sam - thorough, knowledgeable and super customer service. I’m counting down the days until I can get on the slopes and try my new boots out!Posted on Sarah McArdleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Sam is brilliant, A true expert and fills you with confidence. He has worked in fitting shops here, Japan and The Alpes - there is nothing he doesn’t know about boots! My son had a full boot fitting and custom liners in an unusual UK size 14 and I had my boots adjusted as I have a bunion. The difference was incredible. Cannot recommend more highly and so good to have him so local.Posted on Toby BlackVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
