The Fitting Mill is an independent ski boot fitting workshop based in Pirbright, Surrey, offering a highly specialised, appointment-only service. With over 55 years of combined experience fitting ski boots, we focus on delivering comfort, performance, and long-term fit quality without compromise.
We’re not a shop floor with distractions. We’re not here to upsell. We’re a purpose-built boot fitting studio designed to give each customer the time, space, and technical attention they deserve. Every fitting is led by certified specialists trained in biomechanics, foot and lower limb analysis, and the latest custom ski boot technologies. Whether you’re an experienced skier or planning your first trip to the mountains, we take a considered, practical approach tailored to your needs.
Every custom ski boot fit starts with understanding your feet. We begin with a full foot and lower limb analysis, covering foot length, width, volume, arch height, ankle flexion, and alignment. This goes beyond a basic measurement, our assessment helps identify any pressure points, asymmetries, or underlying biomechanical issues that may affect boot fit and skiing performance.
We use industry-standard equipment and expert knowledge to evaluate how your feet behave when weighted and unweighted.
Using the results of your assessment, we carefully select a shortlist of ski boots that best suit your foot shape, skiing ability, and goals. We select from a curated range of boots we trust for fit, performance, and modifiability.
Once a model is selected, we conduct a shell check. This involves removing the liner and standing your foot inside the bare plastic shell to check for correct spacing around the toes, heel, and instep. It helps us identify if the boot is the right “starting point” for your feet or if further adjustments are required.
Once we’ve selected the right ski boot shell and model for your foot, the next step is building a solid foundation inside the boot: the footbed.
At The Fitting Mill, we work in partnership with Sidas, one of the global leaders in custom insole technology. Their products are trusted by boot fitters and elite athletes worldwide for their precision, comfort, and performance benefits.
Using heat-moulding and vacuum-sealing technology, we create fully custom ski boot footbeds on-site. These insoles are shaped directly to your feet, helping to stabilise your arch, improve foot and ankle alignment, reduce unwanted movement inside the boot and prevent fatigue and hot spots on long ski days.
A properly shaped footbed also enhances the consistency of your fit and ensures that your foot remains locked in the correct position inside the boot, making all the difference when it comes to control, responsiveness, and comfort on snow.
Not every ski boot requires modification, but when it does, we have the tools, experience, and workshop environment to make precise adjustments that elevate both comfort and performance.
Once your boot and footbed are in place, we assess the overall fit with a detailed shell and liner check. If any fine-tuning is needed, this is the stage where we address it. That might include heat moulding the liners for a closer anatomical fit, stretching or grinding specific areas of the shell to relieve pressure points, or making alignment changes to help your stance and edge control on the slopes.
These adjustments are carried out only when necessary and always in direct response to what we’ve seen during your fit. Some skiers leave with an off-the-shelf boot that fits perfectly. Others benefit from small, targeted modifications that make a big difference once they’re on snow.
Every change is done in-house using professional ski boot fitting tools, and always with your feedback and comfort at the centre of the process.

Sam is a true Expert boot fitter who really knows his stuff. If there is anything Sam doesn't know about ski boots and fitting, it’s not worth knowing. You will not find a better place to have your ski boots fitted than The Fitting Mill . My feet were measured for length and width. A shell fit assessment was made and Custom footbeds were trimmed to fit the new boots. Liners were heat moulded to achieve a perfect fit and my ski bindings were adjusted to accommodate the grip walk sole on the new boots. Thanks again Sam !Posted on paul mcvicarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a really excellent experience at The Fitting Mill. It’s a proper family-run business and you can immediately tell they genuinely care about what they do. Sam was outstanding from start to finish. I have slightly awkward, odd-shaped feet, and he took the time to properly assess them rather than just trying to sell me a pair off the shelf. The fitting process is thorough and does take time — but that’s exactly what you want. The equipment is top-class and everything is done with precision. What impressed me most was the focus on getting the right result rather than rushing the appointment. Clear advice, no pressure, and a real emphasis on performance and comfort. If you’re serious about skiing and want boots that genuinely fit properly, this is absolutely the place to go. Highly recommend.Posted on Atul PatelTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just purchased my first pair of ski boots from Sam, very impressive service!
